If you are more used to the maintenance that a traditional gas-powered vehicle requires but have recently switched to an EV, we are here to help. The team at Heritage Cadillac is well-versed in EV maintenance and put together this overview so you can stay on track. When you are due for your next service interval, be sure to visit us first.

Tire Care

One thing that hasn't changed is the need to care for your tires. They still provide your points of contact with the road and help you control your vehicle as you drive. We suggest that you check the pressure and tread depth every month or so to stay on top of any potential damages. Your Owner's Manual will have an interval for how often you should have your tires rotated and wheels aligned, two key tasks that ensure your car drives like it should. Generally speaking, a tire rotation should happen about every 7,500 miles. But we always encourage you to visit us sooner if you suspect there is something amiss. Plus, we carry a selection of new tires so you can get your components replaced whenever you need to. Or, if you prefer to have a seasonal set, we can swap those out too.

Under the Hood

Perhaps the greatest change between a gas-powered vehicle and an EV is that you no longer need to schedule oil changes. This fluid is only required for combustion engines, which aren't present in electric vehicles. Now, you need to have your electric motors and battery checked instead. The battery will also likely have coolant now since it has more responsibility than in a traditional set of wheels, and this liquid needs to be topped off every so often. While you have the hood open, be sure to also check how the electronics under there are fairing. There are more connections and wires in an EV that require attention. And due to the complicated nature of these automobiles, we strongly recommend having a professional do an inspection at our Service Center rather than checking it out yourself.

Other Tasks

A unique aspect about EVs in comparison to gas vehicles is their weight. The batteries weigh much more than the engine and fuel tank of the predecessors, and therefore put more weight on the frame, suspension, and wheels. To ensure that nothing gets damaged, we advise that you have your undercarriage looked at regularly. This includes driveshafts, tie rods, the transmission gears, and more that mechanics can work with underneath your ride. Another aspect to consider is the brakes. As with large trucks needing special brakes to stop when they're hauling a heavy load, these components on an EV can also wear down faster and require more frequent attention. And as always, you'll want to have your cabin air filter and wiper blades changed out regularly to keep your vehicle clean.
